Get Extra Cash! By Not Spending It.

by Jackie

The less money you spend, the more money you have. Seems simple enough, right? I’ve always been a frugal person. Though I love to shop, I usually stay within my means, but I have recently decided to really challenge myself to save more. After some inspiring conversations with other frugalistas, I decided to give up on my weekly salon visits. I know, I know. But, I recently grew out my texturizer and only trusted a professional with my virgin tresses.

For the past couple of months, I’ve been doing my hair at home, which has allowed me to not only save money, but spend my “allowance” on more worthwhile things, like my new Kindle Fire (OBSESSED).

The At-Home Salon Tools

Chocolat by Carol’s Daughter

I would never straighten my hair without some form of heat protection.  The Chocolat Smoothing line from Carol’s Daughter not only prevents heat damage, but it also makes it super easy to blow out my curls. I was skeptical at first, but I became a believer after I noticed that the blow dry cream cut down the time that it took to dry and straighten my hair. The only thing I love more than saving money, is saving time.

BaByliss Steam Straightener

My roomie Jenn recently changed my life when she let me borrow her new steam flat iron (BaByliss). It leaves my hair softer and uses less direct heat than other irons that I’ve used. It works on ridiculously thick hair. Trust me, I know.

The Finished Product

Voila! Straight-from-the-salon hair without paying salon money.

Pamper Yourself with Butter by Keba

by Sherria

A box of goodies filled with Butter by Keba products

I was introduced to Butter by Keba products through a friend who lived in Harlem. I have trouble with dry skin and wanted to find out more about brand. After becoming fed-up with drug store moisturizers, I contacted Makeba  Lloyd, founder of Butter by Keba, to learn more about her products. Instead of just “telling” me about the brand, Makeba hand-delivered me a box filled with Butter by Keba products. For the past two weeks, I’ve been using Butter by Keba body butters, lotions, perfumes and salt scrub. Each product is infused with a hand-made fragrance to “capture the essences of color and nature by using eclectic blends of essential and fragranced oils.”*

While using Butter by Keba, I notice that my skin stays soft and moisturized for more than 12 hours. The scent also lasts throughout the day as well. I’m a sucker for moisturizers that smell sweet, so the Georgia Tea Butter has been my body butter of choice for the past three days. I wish the body butters were edible, because they smell so delicious. If you’re interested in purchasing Butter by Keba products, please visit the website. Gift baskets are also available for purchase.

All products "enhance the quality of our skin as well as our daily living experience through the power of scent." - Butter by Keba

Butter by Keba:

Butter By Keba is “a high-end affordable personal care brand,  designed with the fast-paced individual in mind.” The brand “inspires  women and men to slow down and take personal care of themselves with our line of well formulated body care products that offer two enhancing properties, fragrance and moisture.”*

I had an opportunity to ask Founder of Butter by Keba, Makeba Lloyd, a few questions about her product line.

1)    What inspired this product line? I wanted to create a line of products that offered real lasting moisture and perfume quality fragrance in one without harsh chemicals like Phthalates. *Editor’s Note: According to online sources, Phthalates are being phased out of many products in the US, Canada, and European Union over health concerns.

2)    How does Butter by Keba separate itself from other Harlem perfume and oil vendors? We use a blend of essential oils and phthalate free fragrance oils using the technique of a perfumer by combining top, middle and base notes.

3)    In addition to ordering online, can customers find Butter by Keba in local boutiques? Yes, Polish Bar Brooklyn in Prospect Heights carries our line.

4)    You have an extensive line of fragrances. Do you have any plans to expand the products (i.e., cosmetics)? Yes, we have a healthy had care system coming out this month called MyPalmSpa.com.

5) Can you tell me a bit about your hair serum? You can go to (webstie) to find out more information on the hair serum: Fruition Hair Serum is a blend of sunflower, coconut, palm, jojoba and sweet almond oils with just the right amount of shea butter and carnuba wax to give this potion its POW.  Carnuba wax is extracted from the leaf of the palm tree  (Copernica Cerifera-also know as the “tree of life”) and grows primarily in the northeastern regions of Brazil, South America.   When used in very small quantities, it can enhance durability and elasticity of the hair because of its emollient properties.  This product was designed to use in conjunction with other hair products if desired.  Great for chemically treated and natural hair.

About Makeba:

Makeba Lloyd

In 2006, Harlem born,  Makeba Lloyd began blending and mixing fragrance with Shea Butter as a therapeutic hobby to calm and balance her senses while discovering a more convenient method of moisturizing and scenting.  It wasn’t until she traveled to ancient  Egypt on a substantive study tour that the Butter By Keba brand was created to introduce her signature blends.  She was inspired by the illuminating aromas of open air markets in Aswan and fragrant essence houses in Cairo.  Makeba continued her curiosity and fascination of the essence world in the aromatherapy and natural perfumery classrooms of the New York Open Center.  Her learning journey of the natural fragrance world continues as she expands the Butter By Keba brand.

Off-Duty Looks: Purple Eye Shadow

by Sherria

Olivia: Singer and co-star of VH1's "Love & Hip Hop" Photo credit: theybf.com

The “freakin’ weekend” is here and although it’s gray outside on the East Coast, I’m planning to add a splash of color to my face with purple eye shadow. After seeing a photo of Olivia from VH1′s Love & Hip Hop on Theybf.com last night, I figured I should stop waiting around to use the purple eye shadow kit I bought by Maybelline. Below are a few eye shadows from brands that I trust as well as a couple of makeup tutorials for applying purple eye shadow. I hope you enjoy. Happy Friday!

A*cute picks:

CoverGirl Eye Enhancer, Color: Purple Pop (Any Local Drug Store, $3.19)

MAC Eye Shadow, Color: Parfait Amour (MAC, $15)

Maybelline EyeStudio Eye Shadow, Color: Purple Icon 30 (CVS, $9.99)

I usually experiment with my makeup by watching tutorials on YouTube. Here’s two that I found helpful for purple eye shadow application.

Beauty Resolution: Wear Red Lipstick

by Jackie

"Currant" lip liner, "Russian Red" lipstick, "Russian Red" gloss by MAC.

I once asked a makeup counter attendant to help me find a bold lip color. His response, “Not for you.” According to him, my skin was too dark to wear anything other than translucent gloss. Ever since then, I’ve been proving him wrong with bright pinks, shocking purples, and vibrant reds. Writing about his color complex would take a whole book, but the moral of the story here is: You can wear any color you want and look and feel absolutely beautiful.

But, don’t take it from me. I am lucky to have had gorgeous women of color wearing various shades of red lipstick come across my Twitter timeline. Red lipstick is a bold way to spice up your makeup look. Worn alone, or paired with thinly winged black eyeliner, it’s an ode to vintage glamor. The key to pulling off a red lip is finding the right shade for you. Have fun mixing lip liners and glosses with lipstick to find your unique shade.

Where the Wild Things Are: Press-On Polish

by Jackie

I’ve been traveling a lot lately and have had no time to paint my own nails or make a salon run for a mani. Knowing how much I HATE to wear my nails bare, nail aficionado Keren came to the rescue with Sally Hansen Nail Effects strips during an impromptu girls’ getaway. I took her up on her offer to apply them for me and in about ten minutes I had the look of a fresh manicure.

My roomie Jenn also got an instant mani with some H&M press-on polish strips. (I know, I couldn’t believe it, either. H&M!) As you can see, we went for a fun animal theme.

Ready to take on the world!

Bringing Back the Bob

by Jackie

I recently took my braids out and went to the hair salon expecting to have my hair trimmed and styled.  But, my hairdresser suggested I try something new and before I knew it I was getting my hair cut into a short layered bob.

With the exception of my infant and toddler years, I’ve never had hair shorter than shoulder-length. At first, I was a bit dramatic about watching most of my hair fall to the floor, but since then, I’ve fallen more and more in love with my bob. I feel free and light!

Check out the evolution of my hair over the years!

Something New

by Jackie

Before

This summer, I’ve been on a mission to try new things. Last night, I truly ventured into unchartered territory and got my hair braided. My sister, Maronel, originally came up with the idea as a method of giving her hair a break from styling, and after seeing Jill Scott’s look for her summer block party, I just knew I had to try them. I have never worn extensions of any kind up until now, and while I’m still getting used to them I am looking forward to being able to just get up and go every day for a few weeks without having to worry about the humidity affecting my hairstyle. Ah, the sweet taste of freedom!

My style inspiration, Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Slow It Down

by Jackie

Where are they going? / What’s the rush? / Everybody’s embraced, but so out of touch.

- Climb, Mos Def

I used to speed. Without noticing, I’d push my bright yellow Nissan 30-35 miles per hour past speed limits. I was so focused on my destination; I always had somewhere to be. On a late night drive weeks ago, I decided to take the long way home. I eased up on the gas, leaned back, and just enjoyed the ride. Looking around, I realized everything I usually don’t get to see while whizzing by. Like just how beautiful downtown DC is when it is all lit up, and how the usually repetitive and hyped local radio stations take you down memory lane after midnight.

While there is nothing wrong with being driven, there is a lot lost when driving too fast. Months ago, I decided to take a break outside of the office at least once a day, even when I’m swamped and my to-do list runneth over. During one of these breaks in the beginning of the summer, I wandered into Lou Lou and have continued to do so from time to time and get lost in their imaginative accessories. Last week, I spotted an owl ring that I knew I had to have and went back yesterday to get it.

I've always been intrigued by the ability owls have to see in the dark. Though I have a couple of owl accessories, I think I'll officially start my collection with this find from Lou Lou.

I also wandered into a spa and picked up a new nail color.

I love bright nail colors and OPI La Paz-itively Hot is a perfect hot pink. It's quickly becoming my favorite polish shade.
