Guest Post: Tattoos in the Workplace- Are they acceptable?

by Anthony Frazier

Anthony Frazier is a Recruitment and Training Specialist. He is also obtaining a Masters Degree in Leadership and Strategic Human Capital Management from American University.

Everyone has a different way to express themselves. Tattoos have become increasingly a form of expression for Millennials or Generation Y’s.  As the country continues to move into a services economy, impression management is a major factor in securing a job.  The different business environments are becoming more progressive but it is conservative in client relations and brand management.  I use the term “business environment” loosely as regardless of the organization, they still function as a business. Visible tattoos on the forearm, neck, and face can screen out applicants because of the uncertainty of their acceptance by an organization’s customers, clients, and stakeholders.

Visible tattoos can impact an employer’s perception of a candidate depending on the industry, job duties, and environment.  It is not a question of skill but a question of a cultural acceptance.  Your appearance sends a message.  If you are up for a partner position in a prestigious law firm who clients are generally conservative, it can prove problematic because the clients may create preconceived notions of the person’s ability. On the opposing side, if you are targeting an innovative graphic design house, they will more likely be open to outward expression.  During the recruitment and selection process, job seekers should try to minimize potential biases and assumptions that employers may unconsciously use as a hiring criteria.  A comparable example is earrings for men.  I personally have had my ears pierced over ten years, but I rarely wear them at work and certainly not in an interview.  I also have a coworker who has a tattoo sleeve that I recently learned about.  He is possibly one of our most professionally dressed employees but knowingly wears long sleeve shirts so that his skills and abilities, not his tattoo, are the center of attention.

Every employee in some way, shape or form is a representative of the organization or industry that they work. In some cases, tattoos, piercing, extreme hair dye, or unkempt dress can cause a distraction.  People can become more focused on a physical appearance rather than the message being communicated.  Employers factor in the potential reaction of customers, clients, or other stakeholders when selecting hires. Although I work in a relatively relaxed workplace, we have asked employees to be aware of their appearance when attending client meetings or representing the firm.

I think tattoos are great. However, people simply need to be conscious of their placement, especially considering the industry, company, or profession they choose to work.  Tattoos are best placed in locations that can be covered up in someway whether by shirt, jewelry, pants, etc.   This allows a person to be expressive while maintaining “suitable” impression management standards, especially during interviews.  The interview is your opportunity to present you qualifications and skills.  The last thing you want is an employer to be focused on factors other that your capabilities, knowledge, and performance.  With that, I suggest people think about the career they want and the potential reaction of those stakeholders when considering tattoo placement.

Made for TV Only

by Sherria

Last night when I returned home after a grueling 45 minute kickboxing session, I just wanted to kick back and relax and watch TV. Since I don’t really have a Monday night lineup, I decided to turn to TVOne where I knew I could find a wholesome African-American comedy show to help me relax and laugh. I was so happy when I saw Tatyana Ali’s gorgeous face on TV. Her new show, Love That Girl, produced by comedian, Martin Lawrence, has been a hit on the network. I’ve watched the show a few times and there are some funny punch lines. I love her younger brother, Latrell (played by Alphonso McAuley), who aspires to become a stand-up comedian. However, I just can’t get my head around Tyana Jones’ (played by Tatyana Ali) friend Imunique (played by Bresha Webb) who is also her assistant in the real estate office. I know that this show is a comedy and it’s meant for entertainment, but I can’t help but think that there maybe some young women new in their careers who watch this show and might start to believe that the outfits Imunique wears to work are somehow appropriate for the office. P.S. I wouldn’t even wear those clothes on my personal time. But I wont’ judge ;-) As I started to think about other comedy shows, I realize that most of the women in the workplace wear outfits that are provocative or too revealing, meanwhile the men are always dressed in suits and ties. I couldn’t help to think about one of my favorite characters, Maya, from Girlfriends. I love Maya, I swear I do. But, the leather skirts, cleavage revealing shirts, and lingerie blouses under a blazer just aren’t appropriate for a professional environment. That is, unless you work at a fashion house or lingerie store. So while we may get a kick out of our favorite girls on television, just know that the clothes they wear to the office are made for TV only.

TVOne’s Love that Girl

Imunique (to the right in purple). Tights, leotards, and belly chains are not appropriate. Honestly, I believe that Tatyana's skirt is a bit short for the office as well. The female to the left, wearing a maxi dress, works in a hair salon. So that's okay. But totally inappropriate for a conservative office.

Maya (third female to the left). I love her but sheer shirts are a "no-no" in the office, especially a law office. If you want to wear a shear shirt. Make sure you have a cotton shirt underneath and a blazer on top.

It’s Pink Friday…on Monday!

Guest post by Kirsten Treadwell

I hate to admit it but I am indeed a Nicki Minaj fan. What can I say? She is entertaining!  That being said, when I heard she was releasing a lipstick color with MAC cosmetics, I was extremely excited! At the time, the lip color, Pink Friday, could only be purchased online on every Friday from November 26 through December 17, 2010. After failed attempts to purchase the lipstick for two Fridays in a row, I was finally able to buy it on December 10; which I thought was perfect since it would arrive before Christmas vacation. WRONG! Pink Friday was literally out of production because it sold out every week. Needless to say, I didn’t see a Pink Friday until Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

My review:

With all the excitement and anticipation surrounding this lip color I really expected it to pop. I was so excited that I put it on at work, but was dismayed when it appeared lack luster at best. I decided to try it on again once I got home so I could use all the proper tools; liners, lip brush and gloss. When I tried it at home I used MAC Magenta liner over the Pink Friday lip color then blended it and applied a shimmery pink gloss over it and it really stood out. I was looking for a color to really stand out for a club look but it’s more of a pale pink that could be worn every day. If you’re looking for a bright pink for a bold look go with Pink Nouveau instead. Over all Pink Friday lip color was much like the album: disappointing and lack luster at first wear/listen but really stands out after playing it up with complimentary liners and glosses/more listens.

Getting in Shape BEFORE the Holidays

Guest Post by Jim Oguntimein

“Just Because it’s Organic, Doesn’t Mean it’s Healthy!”

This article has been a long time coming. This has been a pet peeve of mine for a while. Somewhere along the way the organic/vegan/ hippy food culture was able to convince mainstream America that because something says “organic” or “vegan” that it is healthy. This could not be further from the truth. Calories are calories no matter where they come from. That is to say that things like carbohydrates, fats, sugars, and calories are what is really important when it comes to losing weight and having a healthy diet.

“There’s really very limited information in people on actual health outcomes with consumption of these products,” says David Klurfeld, PhD, chairman of the department of Nutrition and Food Science at Wayne State University in Detroit. “We don’t know enough to say that one is better than the other.” The true benefit of organic food comes from the way it is processed. Organic food supposedly does not exploit the planet and is more eco-friendly. If you choose to buy organic foods for any reason it should be for its environmental benefits and not in the hope that it will automatically help you lose weight or be healthier.

The most important thing in a diet is the content of the diet. According to the New York Times we get 7 percent of our calories from soft drinks, more than we do from vegetables; the top food group by caloric intake is “sweets”; and one-third of nation’s adults are now obese.  So the question isn’t if your food is organic/vegan or whatever, the question should be “What is the nutritional content of my food?” Eating organic won’t help you lose weight but eating smart and healthy will.

What I eat throughout the day:

For breakfast, I usually eat oatmeal. It is a healthy and low in calories. It’s also a great appetite suppressant. I like salmon and tilapia fish or either chicken breast alone with no sides. These are low calorie lean meats with lots of protein. Vegetables are great, of course! Spinach and Broccoli are my favorite; no corn (it’s useless for dietary purposes). Peanut butter is a great snack and drink lots of water throughout the day.

Flip-Flop Fail

by Jackie

I know. We are all excited because we forgot what it was like to leave our house without wincing at the chilling winds. Sunny days are here again! But, before we get all excited, let’s put things into perspective. It’s not officially Spring yet.

I wish I could say I was surprised when I spotted women already sporting flip-flops, but I’m not.  This is your official warning to save your flip-flops for the beach or the weekend. During rush hour on the Metro, you will get stepped on and your pedicure will go to waste, not to mention all of the dirt your feet will collect walking to your downtown office. Yuck.

Plus, since most of us don’t change into our work shoes until we get our desks, flip-flop wearers have to trudge through the office, with the shoe smacking against their foot bottoms making an annoying noise.

Don’t be that girl.  Don’t let comfort be an excuse for sloppiness!

The alternative…

A cute, sleek flat will take you a long way.  Experiment with a bright color to add some fun to your look.

The Right to Bear Arms

First Lady, Michelle Obama, White House Portrait 2009

by Sherria

When First Lady, Michelle Obama, posed for her White House portrait she received mixed reviews about the sleeveless dress she wore. Some thought the black dress adorned with pearls was classy while some thought she should have covered up her arms in order to symbolize purity, decorum, and professionalism. While many have their opinions on Michelle Obama’s White House portrait, A*Cute Consultants believe that bearing arms can be professional, depending on the atmosphere and the style of top worn.

While chatting with colleagues from various professional settings, we heard accounts of women wearing halter tops and spaghetti strap shirts to work. While every woman has the right to bear arms, let’s remember that our image as a woman should reflect dignity for one’s self and respect for your job and co-workers. Casual, party, and professional attire all have their appropriate place; choose your clothing accordingly.

DON'T: Wear halter, spaghetti, or tube tops to work. This type of clothing is meant for the beach or the nightclub.

DON'T: Wear a halter under a suit jacket. At first glance this may look appropriate to wear under a blazer. However, you will probably find some reason to take your blazer off during the day, exposing your 'party' shirt.

.

DO: Take pointers from the fashionable First Lady and wear three-quarter (3/4) sleeves.

Example: Three-quarter length blouse (find more options at www.newport-news.com)

DO: Wear a cap sleeve. This look is very sophisticated. Banana Republic offers blazers with cap sleeves. (Picture taken from: Banana Republic)

DO: Stock up on long sleeve shirts and/or turtle necks. They are made in a variety of colors, which makes for a very bright winter!

Etiquette is always in style

cubicle

Workplace etiquette is a staple for all seasons and occasions. These guidelines will help you get noticed for all of the right reasons and avoid your coworkers from venting about your ill-mannered ways on Twitter:

Mind your P’s and Q’s. Parents and kindergarten teachers would cringe if they listened in on workplace conversations or read e-mail exchanges.  Being brief does not mean being short.  “Please” and “Thank you” go a long way, not only in the office, but in life.

The boardroom is not your bathroom. Hairstyling, mani/pedis, and flossing are all style staples, but they should not be done at the cubicle.  Your coworkers may appreciate your style, but they do not appreciate the process.

Use your inside voice. Noisy telephone conversations are very disruptive and annoying.  Pick up your handset or use a headset if you are not in your own office or a conference room with a closed door.

I like my beat down low. The new Mariah Carey CD may be a hit, but unless you’re listening to it on your headphones, your coworkers will grow to hate it.  Keep your music, YouTube videos, etc. to yourself. If you don’t use headphones, you will annoy everyone within hearing distance, and not to mention, appear to be a slacker.

Silent ringtones aren’t only for the movies. For most workplaces, putting your cell on vibrate is a must.  Your cell phone blaring Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” should not interrupt a meeting or distract your coworkers from their work.

Social networking should work for you, not against you. We all know that on a slow work day, Facebook, Twitter, and similar sites are entertaining.  But, it can be professional suicide if you put damaging information out on the web.  Don’t put anything out on the web that you would not want your boss or your colleagues to know.

Socialize, don’t villainize. Do not participate in office gossip.  What you say at the water cooler may end up hurting you in the long run.  If others are gossiping, remove yourself from the situation so that you are not even implicated as a passive participant.

To be early is to be on time. Congratulations! You have made it through your 90-day probation period, but that does not mean that it’s time to take it easy.  Being early and having follow-through separates the exceptional employee from the rest.

Skinterns need not apply.

by Jackie

Know your role: dress for the life you want, not the life you have.

With the economy in disarray, many workplaces are looking for inexpensive or free labor as a staffing alternative.  While getting paid a next-to-nothing wage, or nothing in some cases, is not ideal for some, gradstudents, undergrads, and individuals looking for a career change  stand to benefit greatly from internships.  They are a valuable way to gain work experience and add to your skill set.

NOTE: Summer may seem far away, but now is the perfect time to start researching internship opportunities.  Deadlines for competitve opportunities start as early as December.

While you are getting your résumé and cover letter together, do not neglect your wardrobe.  An internship is your chance to flex your professional muscle.  It is the dress rehearsal for your future career opportunities.  Four years ago, I earned the privelege of being selected to intern on Capitol Hill.  My mother (my stylist since ’84) proud of the achievement, sent me key items to add to my wardrobe that I still wear today.  During my time there, however, it was obvious that some young ladies did not have this same privilege, or if they did, chose to return those items to the store and exchange them for clothing more appropriate for the beach or the disco.  The situation got so dire, that The Hill newspaper published an article addressing the issue.

A*cute’s outline of what not to wear in the workplace applies to interns.  Do not think that a student’s salary or a loss of income can be an excuse for not looking your best.  Here are some inexpensive ways to look like a million bucks during your Summer internship:

NOTE: Now is the best time to shop for Spring/Summer clothing.  Off-season items are always cheaper.

The vest:  The blazer alternative

vest

This New York & Company vest is the perfect color for those hot summer months and can easily coordinate with other pieces in your wardrobe for other seasons. The best part, it's only 20 bucks!

sheath

For under $40, this sheath from Target will take you through all four seasons. Consider it an investment at $10/season. For more conservative offices, top this with a blazer or a cardigan or wear a collared-button-down blouse underneath.

peepflats

Skip the flip flops and opt for these chic flats from Payless instead. Comfort, style, and affordability are the name of this game.

Casual Friday: Jeanetic Enhancement

by Jackie

Don’t get excited, it’s not Friday.  We’ve just reached the middle of the week.  A*cute, like your mother and 9 out of 10 doctors, believes that prevention is better than cure, so we’ve decided to preempt your Friday wardrobe choices with this post.

Fridays are a little piece of heaven at the end of a long, taxing work week.  Not only is it the gateway to two free days from the 9 to 5, but it’s also the day when most workplaces loosen their dress codes, allowing employees to break from the conservative Monday through Thursday fashion.  While this is an opportunity to show a more relaxed side of your closet, it’s not time to slack off from being professional.  After all, the day is termed casual Friday, not sloppy Friday.  The weekend may seem close, but it’s not here yet.  A*cute has seen some fashion choices that couldn’t even be worn on Saturdays without a scheduled confession on Sunday.

Leggings as pants are never appropriate for the workplace. No, not even on a Friday. The term even screams a workplace no-no. Leggings-as-pants. Basically, these are tights pretending to be pants. They show too much of the body (no matter how tight it is) and suggest that you're going to the gym, ballet class, or over to a friend's house for Sunday football.

Sweatpants. Again, it's in the name ladies. The pants were designed to "sweat" in, not sit at your cubicle as you organize your Outlook calendar. Reserve sweatpants for the gym and the supermarket. If they say "Juicy" across the butt or "Pink" down the thigh, I even question whether a woman over the age of 23 should wear them outdoors at all.

Shorts. 1) It's getting cold outside. 2) Why would you even want to do this? I'm not talking about capris or floods that are must-have warm weather work wear fixes, but I'm talking about shorts; pants that fall above the knee. Reserve these for barbecues and other Summer weekend activities. I know that the textures available in this pant length may fool some of us into thinking they are appropriate, but they're not. Don't get got ladies!

Fear not! There is hope.  A*cute has tracked down some looks that will definitely inspire you to look your casual best!

The Boyfriend Blazer. It's dressy enough to wear with a tank and slacks Monday through Thursday, but relaxed enough to wear with a white tee and jeans on Friday. Feel free to accessorize this with a colorful statement necklace or pair with a bright-colored fitted tee for a fun alternative.

The Fitted Tee. Baggy tees are too informal for the workplace and are more suitable for painting, but a fitted-tee with a clean fit paired with jeans and even dressed up with funky jewelery is easy to wear and simple. (Pssst, hey...Don't tell anyone, but you can get a rack of these at Forever 21 for around $5 a piece.)

Great-fitting Jeans. Ladies, we all know that nothing beats a good pair of jeans, except...well, no, that's it, good jeans pretty much tops everything. Getting a good fit can be tricky, however, especially for ladies whose waist-to-hip ratio is more than the inch stick-figure models display in the magazines. As hard as it is for me to part with this secret, I feel compelled to spread the denim glory with you all. It's called PZI. It's designed to come in at the waist and glide out over the hip and thigh. Leave the True Religions and the Seven for All Mankind behind if you have a behind. Make sure that your jeans love you as much as you love them.

These basic pieces are just the springboard for all of the Fabulous Fridays to come in your wardrobe.  Feel free to build upon these essentials with jewelery, diversify with colors and textures, and don’t be afraid to throw on some heels.  Pumps don’t have to hide under your desk on Fridays.

A*cute looks forward to your end-of-the-week fashion!
