An A*cute Look at NYFW

by Jackie and Sherria

Here’s our round-up of NYFW!

IFB Conference

We were involved with the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference at Milk Studios in Downtown NYC. The Conference was a great way to kick off the style marathon otherwise known as New York Fashion Week.

We worked with fellow bloggers who not only had a great sense of style, but also a fun sense of humor. All of the panelists offered honest advice for fashion bloggers which can be pretty much summed up as follows: Know your worth, be original, be collaborative, and have a work/life balance.

Here are some of our favorite shots from #IFBCon. Check out the A*cute Facebook page for more pics from the event!

Ainsley Fall 2012 Presentation/Collection

All photos by Scott Pegram from NYEsq. for A*cute.

Full many a gem of purest ray serene  // The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear // Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, // And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

This refreshing collection took its cues from Mother Nature with natural fibers and tribal designs. The designs are reminiscent of the frontier spirit of the Westward Expansion of the 18th and 19th centuries.

What’s appealing about this collection is its practical point of view and apparent wearability. It seems like A*cute and Ainsley have the same philosophy: Fashion is a right, not a privilege. Everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves through their fashion choices.

Fashionista and designer Angela Simmons made an appearance at the show.

Celebration of Cool: Weatherproof

by Jackie | Photos by AlmeniaJPhotography

He pulls on his coat collar as an icy wind fails to interrupt his stride.  The hawk is no match for his cool, winter stands no chance against his resolve.

There is nothing more important than having the right coat when temperatures drop. Outerwear becomes a vital part of an outfit during the winter months, taking precedence over what’s underneath. I recently accepted the challenge of finding the perfect winter coat for my friend, Anthony. Check out what he had to say about the experience below.

For the past couple of years in the DMV there have been some blistering winters.  I’ve kept some warm coats (a snorkel, leather, trench etc.), but for a more timid winter this year, I was looking for something a little lighter and more versatile.  I decided on a grey topcoat.  I had been looking on some sites of choice — J. Crew, Banana Republic, Nordstrom — and found a few options.  I wasn’t too excited about any of them, but getting a coat was a must.  So I decided to consult one of my resident fashionista friends, Jackie.  I know she has an eye for these types of things, and her opinion is valued.  She looked at some of the options and she, too, wasn’t that impressed.  She did whatever it is fashionistas do — pray to a bust of Audrey Hepburn, I don’t know — but she came back with several grey coats.

She mentioned my physique and the type of style she saw me in — “edgy” was the word I think she used — and the choices seemed to fit me to a T.  In the end, I decided on the Grey Top coat with Knitted Collar from Zara.  The coat itself has a knitted zip lining with an outside button closure.  The cut is sleek and rakish and can serve for both evening attire or a winter jaunt around the city — everything I was looking for.  Thanks Jackie and A*cute consulting.  I’m definitely a believer.

A*cute Accessories Photo Shoot with NYesq

by Sherria

You all know that I’m totally in love with accessories! Check out a small photo shoot I did with NYesq on how to accessorize blue jeans and a white tee for a night out. Go to www.nyesq.tumblr.com.

A pair of sexy booties can add a little jazz to any outfit, especially during the colder months

I call this the "grunge" statement necklace. It came with a pair of earrings for $10 at a vendor in the mall. Don't be afraid to walk into a store that sells "junk" jewelry because you never know what treasure you'll find.

Blazing Professionals with Cool Careers

by Sherria

A*cute has added a new section to the blog. “Blazing Professionals with Cool Careers” will feature a young professional each week. The purpose of this section is to showcase young professionals who are making strides in their careers, tell readers how to break into the prospective industry,  provide insight into different dress codes for various work environments and challenge readers to express their personal style in the work place but still maintain a professional image. Our first feature this month is Fadesola from the Washington, DC area.

Fadesola

Fadesola’s career

“I work at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. I am a Project Officer working on the Regional Extension Center Cooperative Agreement program, a provision made under the guise of the HITECH Act that was signed into law under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in February 2009. I work with 9 centers over 13 states and territories, which include Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“My day-to-day responsibilities vary, but I typically am running in and out of meetings with Program Directors and State Leaders. I am responsible for monitoring over $100M in federal funding, so ensuring compliance with federal regulations is an essential component of my job. I also provide technical assistance to guide our programs on how to accelerate adoption of e-technologies in physician offices and meaningfully use them to help achieve the outcomes they desire for their patient population. From time to time I present information either on panels or at meetings on leading practices and data that we’ve collected from the experience thus far.

Challenges

“Work-Life balance is what I find most challenging. When you have a work-provided blackberry and laptop, it seems as if you are working 24/7. Sometimes I have to treat myself to a standard 9-5pm day to ensure that my sanity remains in tact.

Rewards

“I’m participating in a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the delivery of health care. The government has provided billions of dollars in funding to assist health care providers with the adoption of e-technologies to improve health outcomes and the delivery of care among their patient population. To say that I played a role in that, I played a role in improving and impacting the health of a population, that’s inspiring.”

Where to start

“If I could give advice to anyone trying to get their foot in the door, I would tell them to be visible, leverage your alumni network and join a professional organization. I applied to a government fellowship, and that is how I was hired at my current job. However, a number of my colleagues that work in my office or along similar veins have heard about their jobs via alumni listservs and events sponsored by a professional organization. Even now, I make sure I keep a decent pulse on what’s going on in the field– my membership and participation in several professional organizations has helped.

“My college education significantly contributed to where I am today. I attended a well-known university in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. Their involvement in policy, especially health policy has added to the value of my degree. The career database at the university’s career center was pretty helpful. As an undergraduate student, I always had an internship or a well-paying job, and these internships and jobs were ones I found via the career database. Also, to be quite frank, my university has some prestige in the Public Health industry, so having them as apart of my resume helps.

Style in the office

“The normal work attire/dress code at my place of employment is business or business modified

“I’m very trendy with most of my business ensembles. Being a female helps, so I’m always finding trendy ways to maintain my business attire. I definitely hopped onto the Michelle Obama bandwagon when I decided to begin pairing my cardigans with a cute waist belt. I’d consider myself somewhat of a trendy person, so I maintain a lot of my “trendyness” and personal style the stilettos and accessories I wear.

Love for African prints

“I don’t necessarily wear my ankara (the african print usually worn for special occasions) to the office. Well, I’ll take that back. I do have some ankara blazers, so I’ll pair that with a business skirt or business slacks from time to time when I come into the office. When I have a seamstress sew my ankara, I typically have them sewn into styles for every day wear. So a cute little cocktail dress for an after 5pm event or a nice gown for an evening gala.”

-As told to A*cute editors by Fadesola. Special thanks to Fadesola for sharing her story with us. If you have any questions for Fadesola, please email us at lookacute@gmail.com and she will answer you as soon as possible.

Pageantry

by Jackie

A little known fact about me is that I am a pageant enthusiast. I am usually a couch-judge, scoring televised Miss Universe and Miss America pageants on poise, projection, talent, and beauty. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I was asked to be a judge for the Fourth Annual Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant hosted by the Nu Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The other judges and I carefully observed the contestants as they competed for a $750 academic scholarship. The pageant criteria centered around community involvement, campus leadership, and academic achievement along with public speaking, originality, style, and confidence. I admire the courage of all of the young ladies who took to the stage.  Congratulations to the 2012 Nu Beta Chapter Miss Black and Gold Scholarship winner Taelor Conley who will advance to the next round to compete!

Urban Outfitters Makes Recycling Fashionable

by Sherria

I recycle plastic water bottles, but I haven’t recycled clothes in the past. The closest I have ever come to recycling clothes is buying second-hand clothing or exchanging clothes with other professionals during A*cute’s Annual Clothing Exchange (2012 date TBD…stay tuned). Although I frequent Urban Outfitters clothing store, I didn’t notice they had a line of vintage and recycled clothing. The Urban Renewal Collection from Urban Outfitters features clothing, accessories, and jewelry that are vintage, recycled, or recreated from old fabrics. Below are a few stylish pieces.

A*cute picks:

Urban Renewal Vintage Tweed Blazer (Urban Outfitters, $49)

Urban Renewal Wool Sleeve Eternity Scarf (Urban Outfitters, $29)

Urban Renewal Vintage Cropped Camo Jacket (Urban Outfitters, $49)

Big Winner at the Golden Globes: The Headband

by Jackie

Among all of the dos and don’ts at this year’s Golden Globes, headbands scored a huge win. I love that Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron topped off their award night looks with decorative hair accessories.

Hair accessories are a low-cost, easy, and fun way to add some glitz to your look. As my hair grows out of a bob, I’m in the process of collecting hair accessories to make styling easier. These pieces would be perfect for formal occasions.
