Off-Duty Looks: Purple Eye Shadow

by Sherria

Olivia: Singer and co-star of VH1's "Love & Hip Hop" Photo credit: theybf.com

The “freakin’ weekend” is here and although it’s gray outside on the East Coast, I’m planning to add a splash of color to my face with purple eye shadow. After seeing a photo of Olivia from VH1′s Love & Hip Hop on Theybf.com last night, I figured I should stop waiting around to use the purple eye shadow kit I bought by Maybelline. Below are a few eye shadows from brands that I trust as well as a couple of makeup tutorials for applying purple eye shadow. I hope you enjoy. Happy Friday!

A*cute picks:

CoverGirl Eye Enhancer, Color: Purple Pop (Any Local Drug Store, $3.19)

MAC Eye Shadow, Color: Parfait Amour (MAC, $15)

Maybelline EyeStudio Eye Shadow, Color: Purple Icon 30 (CVS, $9.99)

I usually experiment with my makeup by watching tutorials on YouTube. Here’s two that I found helpful for purple eye shadow application.

Wednesday Wish List: Leopard Print Chucks and Jason Wu at Target

by Jackie

Rawr

Ok, [insert sigh here] I was one of those people that didn’t get the whole Concords thing. The retro Jordans caused a frenzy across the country over the holidays, with people lining up for hours to get the limited edition shoes. But, some say tomato, I say “eh.”

Converse Addict Leopard Print Chuck Taylor All Star

Leopard Print Chucks only available on the Japan "Addict" line.

I do, however, love Converse footwear, which is great for the sake of my wallet because they are much more affordable than other sneakers, and offer a lot of style options. I’ve been tracking a leopard print pair for a while, but they are only available through their Japanese site.  (Domo Arigato and Konichiwa is the extent of my Japanese knowledge, thanks to songs by the Styx and Robyn, respectively.)

Luckily for persistent shoppers like me, the Converse website has a design-your-0wn option.

Maybe I should take up shoe designing. Hmmm.

After a few clicks… Voila! My dream Chuck Taylors! I’ve saved my custom design to purchase later. Can’t wait!

Wu is Right on Target

I love luxe for less lines when they’re done right. Target will release Jason Wu’s collection on February 5.  From what I’ve seen so far, I want EVERYTHING! Now you can own pieces from First Lady Michelle Obama’s favorite designer.

On Steady Ground

by Jackie

I was at home during yesterday’s 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Virginia that shocked DC. My friends and coworkers had to evacuate their offices after the original tremor hit. Thankfully, I was able to avoid the scramble, instead I took cover in my room. If I’m ever in an emergency at work, I hope that I’m equipped with comfortable shoes that allow me to move quickly.

Early in the season, I bought these Mossimo wedges from Target that I’ve worn nearly every day this summer.

They are uber comfy without sacrificing style. The interlocking straps and the exposed silver zipper in the back give the shoe an edgy look.

Most recently, I wore them with a bright white blazer and a simple black sheath.

Flirting with Old Man Winter

by Sherria

Yesterday as I looked outside my window to determine the weather (instead of checking the news or weatherchannel.com) I saw big flakes of snow swirling from the sky. Sounds dramatic, but the snowflakes really were swirling. While I would usually pick up the nearest hat, gloves, and scarf I found on the floor of my closet, I decided to do something different; I thought about style instead of warmth. Stupid? As my mother would say “it’s too cold to be cute.” But, I am starting to rethink that position. I had a huge orange and silver scarf in the closet with silver designs that I never wear and a warm cream pea coat in the closet that I don’t like to wear because I don’t want to get it dirty. Well, today I wore that scarf (which is super warm because it’s so big that I can wrap it around my neck multiple times) and I wore the cream coat (I’ll just get it dry cleaned at some point). As, I travel around in the cold weather, I have noticed accessories that allow you to look fashionable while protecting yourself from old man winter. Check out some of the accessories below that may be able to spruce up your winter look.

Fashionable Finds:

Where to buy (clockwise):

1) Juicy Couture ‘mini’ Sequin Hand Warmers (nordstrom, $30)

2) New York Designed New Wave Winter Bomber Faux Fur Aviator Hat (amazon.com, $19)

3) Knit Circle Scarf (yesstyle.com, $30)

4) Lined Leather Gloves (Nordstrom, $60)

5) Echo Pot Top Mittens (Nordstrom.com, $28)

A*cute picks:

1) ‘Wrap-around’ scarves: As seen in item #3- This scarf is a perfect way to keep your neck warm while adding a little bit of European chic-ness to your outerwear.

2) Bomber Hat: As seen in item #2- I can’t walk down the street in New York without seeing someone with a bomber hat. This hat not only protects your head, but keeps you ears warm. This will save you from buying ear-muffs. You can find these hats anywhere- try the faux-fur quilted bomber hat by Dockers, sold at Sears for $15.

3) Leggings: I wear cotton leggings underneath my slacks to keep the wind from blowing through my pants.

Winter Leggings (American Apparel, $38)- I usually buy my leggings from Target, Kmart, or Walmart; they are much cheaper.

Cross my heart

by Jackie

I’m so excited about Target’s latest luxury-for-less designer collection from Mulberry.  The British brand  just released its collection for the bargain retailer this month.  While on a Columbus Day Weekend shopping trip with one of my faves, I stopped another fellow shopper sporting a cute black cross-body bag and demanded she tell me asked her where she got it from. “Over there,” she said, pointing to the purse section.  “In Target?” I asked in disbelief.  Sure enough, two minutes later, I was in purse heaven.

Mulberry's cross-body "Lily" bag is priced at $650.

This Mulberry For Target cross-body bag cost me less than $30!

Campus Chic

 by Jackie

My [not-so-little-anymore] sister Maronel is uber excited to start college in a few weeks; so much so, that she is already proudly sporting her GWU sweatshirt all over the place.   It was about eight years ago that I left the Bronx for DC, so I only got to see her on my visits home and I feel like I missed out on a lot.  I can’t wait until we’re in the same city!

Her big move had me reminiscing on my days as a college-bound girl.  I had no idea what to expect.  I was nervous to leave home, yet excited to move to a new city on my own and experience all that college had to offer.

Among many other pre-college discussions, my mom warned me against being sloppy: “Don’t get into that nasty habit of wearing your pajamas to class.”

You can be comfy without being sloppy. A pair of nice-fitting jeans and a cardigan is the staple undergrad outfit. When picking out a school bag, make sure it's something sturdy that can fit your laptop and books. You don't want to be lugging things in your hands walking across campus to get to class all because you wanted to wear your pretty little purse. Chucks are my fave pair of sneakers. They will never do you wrong!

Get the look!

You may think that your work study job is not that serious. But, it's the perfect training ground for your career. Use this opportunity to dress professionally and to meet as many university/college administrators and staff as possible. You never know whose path you may cross.

Get the look!

Congrats Maronel! I’m proud of you!

Here comes the bride

by Sherria

Let’s face it, we are getting older and it seems like everyone is getting married. I know three couples that are getting married before the Fall starts. While I am happy for the beautiful brides- to- be, I can’t help but to think about sticking to a moderate budget when purchasing bridal shower and wedding gifts. Although my friends and I believe that the presence of loved ones is the most important aspect of hosting a wedding ceremony, it is still nice for a couple to receive quality gifts from family and friends.  So, I’ve done some online shopping and discovered that there are gifts that you can purchase under $50. Below are some gift suggestions.

Bridal Shower

Surprisingly, the Victoria’s Secret Bridal Collection isn’t expensive at all. They have a lot of lingerie under $50 on the website.

Mesh & Lace Baby Doll (VictoriasSecret.com, $35)

Satin Slip (VictoriasSecret, $38)

Wedding Gift

I believe that the wedding gift should be something that both parties can use. I am an advocate for health living, so I would suggest buying cookware. Couples can start off a healthy marriage by eating healthy.

Food Steamers can be bought from Target, WalMart, or Macy's for under $50. Most of them range from $20-$38.

Cutlery sets usually range from about $50 up. Quality Stainless steel sets will cost you a bit of money. But check out Macy's Kitchen/Cutlery section; most of the sets are now on sale.

Hope my suggestion will be of use to you as you start shopping for gifts.

Stay tuned on A*cute to find out how to pick out the perfect outfit for the wedding. You want to look fab, but not better than the bride. Check back with A*cute for updates.

Anwhere but here.

by Jackie

Beaches and barbecues are all that’s on my mind as Fourth of July weekend rolls around. Work has been incredibly stressful with two upcoming conferences and a heavy news cycle.  What’s keeping me from going crazy is occasionally daydreaming about my upcoming vacation in August with my friends. It’ll be six days of sun, fun, and laying around in the Florida Keys (BP will not stop us!).  Though I’ve been looking forward to this trip for MONTHS, I neglected to buy a bathing suit. So now, I’ve got a few weeks to order one in enough time. I’ve got a couple of old reliables that I’ll be bringing along, but I want to add something new to my tiny collection.  I’m asking you, yes YOU, to help me choose.

Vote below!

I adore the 50′s pin-up style of this suit from Mod Cloth.  It’s fun, flirty, and different. The only drawback is the price.  It’s a whopping $90, which is may more than I’d ever want to pay for such little fabric.  But, it may just be cute enough to be worth it.

This sassy little number from Victoria’s Secret is right up my alley.  I love halter tops on swimsuits and the pink/brown/white color combination would look nice against my complexion. With a total price of $20, there’s not much of a drawback here.

It may sound weird, but my favorite part of my body is my shoulders. Call me old-fashioned, but I think baring shoulders is a demure way to be sexy. This tankini swim set from Target is priced at $30.

The Transformation

by Sherria

This morning I had to wake up early to prepare for an event at the office but I needed something a bit conservative that I could easily transform from dork to chic. The answer: an Orange sheath dress, black blazer, and flats

I took off the blazer and it looks like a completely different outfit. A pair of pumps would make this outfit great for going out after work.

Coral Crush Dress (Target, $25)

Relaxed Career Jacket (Forever 21, $24.80)

Flat shoes are great if you are in a profession where constantly on your feet for the majority of the day. Heels are great if you can sit at a desk or want to attend a networking event or happy hour after work.

My New Spring Fling: Trench Coats

by Sherria

Me and my puff sleeve trench coat from Zara. I love puff sleeve anything!

The sun has everyone fooled! It hasn’t been hot outside the past few days but the sun will make you believe that it’s summer, not spring. Sorry, as much as I want it to be summer I have to accept that wearing a jacket is necessary until June. Light trench coats are perfect for the “in-between” weather we have been experiencing over here in the northeast. My last trench coat was too baggy (Jackie told me that I have a complex; I think I’m bigger than what I am). Whatever the case, I needed a new trench that was tailored to fit my frame. I found a very cute trench at Zara with puff sleeves! Below are a few trench coats that you may want to pick up if you don’t already have a light jacket.

Trench Coats:

Belted Trench Coat (Target, $50)

New Zealand Green Trench (Old Navy, $50)

Miss Sixty Double-Breasted Pleated Trench (Overstock.com, $106)
